This is an evening class. 

This course seeks to raise awareness among participants about the field of professional social work.  It provides an introduction to the values, skills, knowledge, and competencies that guide social work.  Key content areas include the origins and evolution of social work, the history and role of social welfare, understanding the person-in-environment and strengths perspectives, types of social work practice, client populations, research-informed practice, the Code of Ethics of the profession, and the nine social work competencies. 

Course objectives are accomplished through assigned reading, lecture, discussion, quizzes and/or one page reflections, and scheduled assignments.  The course is designed to encourage critical thinking and to promote and measure introductory awareness of the values, skills, knowledge, and competencies of the field of social work.
